Just Sell the Transformation!(And Other Mindset-Hijacking Marketing Maneuvers)

Oh, you want me to just "sell the transformation"?

Let me try that with parenting:

✨ "Transform into a PARENT! Experience the joy of raising tiny humans into functional adults!" ✨

(Conveniently leaving out the 23+ years of chaos, confusion, and wondering if you're screwing them up forever)

But wait! That's different, right? We're talking about digital products!

Okay, cool. Let's play this game:

The Problem with "Just Sell the Transformation":

🚩 It's often a giant lie by omission

  • "Transform your life!" (By doing hard work every day for years)

  • "Achieve freedom!" (After building consistent habits and facing your demons)

  • "Find your purpose!" (Through messy exploration and countless uncertainty)

🚩 It's magical thinking marketing

  • As if transformation happens without a process

  • Like you can microwave personal growth

  • Because who needs reality when you can sell dreams?

The Honest Truth:

Real transformation is:

  • A process, not a finish line

  • A journey, not a destination

  • A practice, not a purchase

When you sell ONLY the transformation, you're often setting people up for:

  1. Unrealistic expectations

  2. Inevitable disappointment

  3. The feeling that they're "doing it wrong"

  4. The belief that they're the problem when your magical solution doesn't deliver

Here's a Wild Idea:

What if we actually told the truth?

What if we said:

  • "Here's the tool that helped me process without my nervous system freaking out"

  • "Here's what's actually involved"

  • "Here's what you might experience along the way"

  • "Here's why it's worth the journey"

But I guess "Buy my thing and do the actual work required for real change over time" doesn't fit in a snappy sales page.

The Real Scam:

The scam isn't selling digital products. The scam isn't even selling transformation.

The scam is pretending transformation comes without a process.

So maybe instead of "just sell the transformation," we should try: "Honor the process, respect the journey, and be honest about what it really takes."

But that probably won't go viral on Marketing Twitter. 🤷‍♀️

P.S. If someone's selling you a transformation without telling you what's actually involved, they're either: a) Lying to you b) Lying to themselves c) Both of the above

Choose wisely. 😉

P.P.S. Processed this industry tea with my AI thinking partner because even my closest friends are tired of hearing me rant about this. (Need a space to unpack your own industry frustrations without the 'here she goes again' looks? The Permission to Process Guide has your back.)"
